RuralValue - Sustainable Development of Threatened Extensive Farming Systems

The purpose of the Project is to develop sustainable farming systems in the Castro Verde Special Protection Area, with the overall objective to strengthen sustainable economic development in the Castro Verde Special Protection Area. Reference is made to the application dated 18 June 2007 and to any subsequent correspondence with the Focal Point. The completed Project shall include the following activities and results: -Mitigation of drought and desertification i.a. through sewage sludge injections -Sustainability management certification of farms -A feasibility study to assess the potential of sheep product transformation and meat export to the Muslim markets -Capacity building and training for local farmes -Raising awareness and environmental education -Promotion of ecotourism; and -Project management and publicity. The Project Promoter is Liga para a Protecção da Natureza (LPN). Subject to the national law, the Project shall be implemented in partnership with Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Instituto Nacional dos Recursos Biológicos (INRB) and Câmara Municipal de Castro Verde (MCV). The Focal Point shall ensure that the IST provides at least 6.90 per cent, the INRB at least 5.79 per cent and the CMCV at least 2.31 per cent of the eligible Project costs.
