The purpose of the Project is to set the process of regenerating the forest ecosystem under way, with the overall objective of restoring the natural forest ecosystems in north-west Murcia. Reference is made to the application, dated 19 September 2006, as well as additional information from the Focal Point dated 09 January, 12 April, 13 April and 18 April 2007. The completed Project will include the following activities and results: - detailed project planning and design completed (data collection, studies and baseline establishment; detailed action plan); - measures to reduce soil erosion adopted (hillside and watercourse stability improved; soil-based nutrient levels reduced; water quality in streams and rivers improved); - reforestation (plant coverage augmented; biodiversity broadened; risk of soil erosion reduced; CO2 levels reduced); - silvicultural treatments (growing conditions improved; specimen competition reduced; vegetation strengthened against external sources of damage); - phyto-sanitary treatment (growth conditions, vegetation vitality and stability improved; resistance against external damage increased); - roadworks (existing roads improved; quick access by fire-fighting units ensured); - Project management and administration (site inspections and surveillance; biological and satellite monitoring; preparation of a forest fire prevention programme, including through use of GIS; health and safety measures for the workers; publicity work; reporting). The Project Promoter is the General Directorate for Natural Environment under the Ministry for Industry and Environment in Murcia Region.
