Improving the Reclamation and Reuse of the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Wastes in Agriculture and Environmental Applications

The purpose of the Project is to improve the processing of organic waste and increase the production of compost in the Municipality of Chania, with the overall objective to maximise the exploitation of organic waste as a natural resource. Reference is made to the application dated 25 November 2008 and to any subsequent correspondence with the Focal Point. The completed Project shall include the following activities and results: - Tender and procurement procedures; - Improving the quality of organic waste; - Optimising the composting process and quality of the produced compost; - Optimising the management process of the produced compost; - Creating a distribution and promotion system for the produced compost; - Project management and publicity activities. The Project Promoter is the Inter-Municipal Enterprise for the Management of Solid Wastes. Subject to national law, the project shall be implemented in partnership with Crete region, the Technical University of Crete, Bioforsk Soil and Environment section (Norway), the Technological education institute of Crete, the Prefecture of Chania and the Municipal enterprise of water and wastewater of Chania. The Focal Point shall ensure that the Government of the Hellenic Republic provides at least 50 percent of the estimated eligible Project costs.
