Digitalizing and preserving the written legacy of Bulgaria

The purpose of the Project is to establish a digitisation centre, to digitise a selection of historical periodicals and manuscripts, and to develop an electronic management system for published books, with the overall objective of conserving Bulgarian written heritage and making it available to the public. Reference is made to the application, dated 24 April 2008, and to any subsequent correspondence with the Focal Point. The completed Project shall include the following activities and results: - project management; - publicity activities; - refurbishment of the digitisation rooms, including the installation of electrical and air-conditioning systems; - procurement and purchase of equipment for digitisation; - scanning and digitisation of Slavic 14th century manuscripts; - scanning and digitisation of Bulgarian periodicals (1878-1940); - scanning and digitisation of Sidjil catalogue (Ottoman registery documents); - development of a National Print Book Registry, an electronic system for coordinating and updating information related to published books; and - exchange of experiences in Bulgaria. The Project Promoter is the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library. The Focal Point shall ensure that the State budget of Bulgaria provides at least 15 percent of the estimated eligible Project cost.
