Towards Better Surrounding Environment - Investigation and Forecasting of the Potential Environmental Pollution from Landfills

The purpose of the Project is to assess the potential impact of waste landfills on the environment in Bulgaria and to develop a GIS-based forecast model, with the overall objective of contributing to environmental protection through improving waste management. Reference is made to the application dated 24 April 2008, and to any subsequent correspondence with the Focal Point. The completed Project shall include the following activities and results: 1. Preparatory works - selection of 5 landfills and development of an overall strategy. 2. Conducting an historical survey of the landfills (regional and local research) and elaboration of chemical analysis. 3. Development of a spatial model and integration with the current system (ExEA). 4. Development of guidelines for 5 landfills, and conducting training. 5. Project management and publicity activities. The Project Promoter is the Executive Environment Agency at the Ministry of Environment and Water. The Focal Point shall ensure that the Bulgarian state budget provides at least 15 percent of the estimated eligible project cost.
