The purpose of the Project is developing a fully operational improved control system for content of dioxins and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in Latvian fish products, with the overall objective of securing that Latvian fish products are safe for human consumption, and quality is in accordance with EU regulations. Reference is made to the application dated 5 March 2007, and subsequent correspondence with the Focal Point dated 12 October 2007, 7 December 2007 and 21 December 2007. The completed Project shall include the following activities and results: 1. evaluation of fish production compliance with European Union legislation in the field of benzo(a)pyrene and dioxin allowable contents; 2. the adoption and implementation of a dioxin determination method in the National Diagnostic Centre (NDC); 3. assessment of negative impact on the environment from fish production processing (with special focus on the smoking process); 4. publicity activities; 5. project management. The Project Promoter is the Ministry of Agriculture. The Project shall be implemented in partnership with the Norwegian Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research (NIFES), five Latvian fish producers (Gamma-A ltd.; Unda Ltd.; Sabiedriba IMS Ltd.; Randa Ltd.; and Brivais vilnis JSC) and the state scientific institution Food Safety, Animal Health and Environmental Research Institute. The Focal Point shall ensure that the Project Promoter provides at least 15 percent of the estimated eligible project cost.
