While most industries are scaling down their workforce as a result of the credit crunch across the United States, the beauty industry is one of the few where demand for workers is projected to grow by 20 percent between 2008 to 2018, a rate that is much faster than the average for all occupations, including the equally booming healthcare industry.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment numbers are expected to vary according to occupational specialties, with demand for hairstylists and cosmetologists growing by 20 percent and barbers increasing by 12 percent.

This growth will primarily come from an offshoot of increased awareness and consciousness to look good due to media influence and increasing population. These add up to more demand for basic cosmetic and hair services. Moreover, there is now a greater demand for cosmetic applications and advanced hair treatments by young people and the so-called postwar baby boomers.

This is a global phenomenon that is happening simultaneously not just across the United States, but all over the world, from Asia and Australia to Africa and Europe.

Minimum Education Requirements

In the United States, all cosmetologists and hairstylists are required to have at least graduated from high school for licensing purposes. This does not mean, however, that all high school graduates can automatically apply for a license as cosmetologist or hairstylist.

Aside from being a high school graduate or GED certified, you must have completed a program from state-accredited vocational schools and take the state licensing board consisting of written and oral tests. In some instances, the test includes actual demonstrations to assess an applicant’s practical knowledge in cosmetology.

A certificate in cosmetology training is also considered for securing a barber’s license in many parts of the United States. A few states issue the same license for both cosmetology and hairstyling, but most states require separate licenses for skin care specialists, manicurists, and pedicurists.

Searching for Grants

As noted earlier, cosmetologists need at least high school education and formal training for their chosen line of specialization in the field of cosmetology. After high school, they have to enroll in government accredited colleges that offer cosmetology as a course.

This phase of the cycle is expensive, just like any other training activities in the American system that involves going to school. If your course is for two years, you can apply again through FAFSA to help you cover a substantial portion of your educational expenses for two years. If you qualify for FSEOG, you can expect to receive a minimum of $100 and a maximum of $4000, depending on your financial need as measured in your submitted FAFSA file, timing of your application, and the policies of the student financial assistance office of your school.

Timing invariably means you need to submit your FAFSA file at the earliest possible time to ensure that you get the first crack of the federally funded grant pie before it becomes exhausted. Even if you qualify for the Pell Grant, but if you submit your application too close to the deadline, you may just be allotted $100 or none at all, because funds may have already been exhausted by the time you submitted your completed FAFSA form.

Westmore Academy of Cosmetic Arts Makeup Scholarship. This is a scholarship for advanced students. It’s a six-week course designed to help prepare students for a career in high fashion. Another scholarship in amount of $1300 each is available to six students to study makeup applications for movies and television for 12 weeks.

Pat Goins Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is for three students from AACS-member schools. The grant is for $1000 each to cover the cost of tuition. The amount is released in favor of the school in behalf of the selected students.

In the light of the shorter study period and faster ROI for students enrolled in cosmetology, there are more grants available in cosmetology than any regular baccalaureate degrees.

Over time the Hispanic minority in the U.S.A. has grown to such a scale that it even surpassed the African American population so it can hardly be called a minority anymore. Even so, the number of Latinos involved in forms of higher education remains alarmingly low. There are several key factors that contribute to the lack of college education within the Hispanic minority.

Family issues are one of the reasons why a high percentage of Latino youth, especially girls, don’t attend higher education. Usually, Hispanic parents are reluctant to let their daughters leave home and move to another place to attend college. They would rather prefer that they get a job and stay with the family.

When it comes to young Latino men, most of the time higher education is not even a real option anyway because they don’t even graduate from high school. Instead, they drop out to get a job early and help their families financially. Because the Hispanic families usually face many pecuniary problems which in turn makes their life a continuous struggle, parents prefer that their offspring stay home for emotional support also.

Statistics also show that Scholarship for Hispanics is at a very low number and, even if the Latino students receive free tuition funds most of them just opt for a two year degree or a technical one.

Private, Federal and State Grant programs

Over the course of the last 20 years more and more members of the Hispanic minority started to attend college education, actually. The number has risen by around 75%. During 2002 the government spent over $85 million dollars for a wide range of Hispanic grants for college. The first sum paid for tuition was 15$ million dollars, and another $70 million dollars were disbursed shortly after. Hispanic institutions for higher education accept students who is at least one fourth Latino. These colleges are located in New York, California, Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico.

The National Hispanic University located in California awards grants in Silicon Valley, which goes to prove the existence of Hispanic grants for college aimed at undergraduates interested in specific career paths. This program has no academic requirements but students who prove very good leadership skills are preferred. The amount provided by CHCI differ on the type of education students attend. For Hispanics in the community college, the sum awarded are $1000, students attending a four – year academic institution gets $2500, and this sum is doubled for those in graduate level institutions. This money is to be spent only on tuition, books, room and board and any other college expenses.

To make sure that the students progress and complete their education each grant is divided by the number of years it takes to graduate. For example, a $2500 grant will be paid in four equal parts of $625 per annum. The money is sent directly to the recipients as a check.

Other foundations like the Hispanic Scholarship Fund Institute are making efforts in convincing the students that, for one reason or another dropped out of college to go back and finish their education. Other grants provided by the institute are aimed at students who already have a two year degree with the intention of convincing them to finish a four year program.

In recent history, the Asian minority living in the United States had to struggle with all sorts of issues. The cold hard facts are that people coming from Asia went and are still going through emotional, racial and even physical abuse. When someone is referring to Asians, for the most part, they are thinking about people that are coming from the western part of Asia.

But in reality, the Asian minority has a lot of members who originate from countries like India or their neighbors, Sri Lanka. Also, as if it wasn’t hard enough already for the Asian minority to find support in the U.S.A., bonds with the local residents became almost impossible to form after the tragedies of 9/11.

A good example of the ill treatment that Asians have to endure is the discriminatory treatment that Indians receive. Another example is the way today’s society looks at Vietnamese people or Muslims. Just because some groups belonging to their race were responsible for tragic events in the past, that doesn’t mean that the men and women you see on the street are bad and don’t have anything to offer.

To make matters even worse, several educational institutes stopped admitting Asian undergraduates, and many firms stopped employing Asian people, and these are to name but a few of the issues Asians have to struggle with.

Under these sad circumstances, men and women who come from Asia can barely survive day by day life so being able to save money for education is out of the question. Luckily there are some programs that offer grants for Asian students but the truth is more financial help is needed for this minority.

Financial Aid Sources

A good source of grants for Asian students is the Asian American Journalists Association ( AAJA ) which was set up in 1981 by several journalists of Asian origin set to raise the participation of their people in the news media. AAJA is a non-profit organization with around two thousand members and while their main offices are located in San Francisco, they also have twenty branch offices throughout the U.S.A. and Asia.

AAJA has 3 programs that provide grants for Asian students interested in a career in the media. One of them is the AAJA Internship Grant for Broadcasting awarded annually, which finances the costs of living and transportation for one person doing the internship at a television or radio network. For people working at a news organization AAJA offers the Chicago Tribune Print and New Media Internship Grants, which can be used to supplement living or travel expenses.

People working as interns at smaller broadcasting stations or medium-sized newspapers can also benefit from financial aid in the form of the Stanford Chen Internship Grant. For any applicant to be eligible to receive this grant, he must prove he is very serious about working in broadcast journalism. Asian Cultural Council

The Asian Cultural Council offers grants for Asian people with an aptitude for both visual or performing arts. The grant will cover any project related cost like equipment, research, material, travel expenses, rehearsal space and many others. SEASREP Grants

The (SEASREP), commonly known as Southeast Asian Studies Regional Exchange Program is managed by the SEASREP Foundation in Manila, which is sponsored by the Japan Foundation and the Toyota Foundation. Grants for Asian students were given to those interested in many activities like language training or studying a Southeast Asian country other than their own. Sadly, the present state of the global economy has taken its toll on the grant program making sponsorships no longer available for now. Still, their annual training programs continue, and those interested should check their website for important news updates.

The U.S. Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce (USPAACC)

The USPAACC’s main purpose is to increase the number of Asian American students in higher education and does so by offering tuition assistance to students for more than 21 years. The Pan Asian Scholarship is available in any field of education and some of the large corporate donors include FedEx, McDonald’s, Pepsi and many more.

The Bruce Lee scholarship requires students to write an essay that portraits the challenges they had to struggle with and overcome during their lives. While the Pell Grant is addressed to a very large segment of undergraduates, there are other methods of getting money to pay for tuition that is addressed to particular types of students. A good example is the Woman’s Independence Scholarship program sponsored by the Sunshine Lady Foundation that offers help to women who have been the victims of domestic violence and developed emotional issues.

Along the same lines is the Raise the Nation organization which helps out single mothers, or The American Association of University Women, that offers tuition money, especially to women who are a part of minorities. Like the aforementioned categories, Native Americans who want to go through college did not get left behind and also have ways to receive financial aid. Actually there is a wide range of options available for this particular minority, some given by private institutions, others by specific tribes and of course the federal ones. Most of these are given based on the need of every student.

College money from private societies

Over time, several groups came into existence to help American Indians and the process of applying for a grant usually only requires the student to contact the organization.

One of the well known organizations of this type is the Daughters of the American Revolution which provides free tuition money for both female and male Native Americans alike. The AISES Environmental Protection Agency Scholarship is also provided by this institution and sponsors twenty-seven Students with an interest for chemical engineering, medicine, biology, chemistry or commercial management.

Graduate and undergraduate students of Baptist confession can benefit from a range of $1,000 to $2,000 for each year offered by the American Baptist Financial Aid Program. Financial aid granted by the American Indian Tribes.

American Indians who are part of a certain tribe are entitled to receive money for tuition from the tribe itself in order to pursue higher education. The Menominee Indian Tribe Adult Vocational Training Program can sponsor up to 70 undergraduates interested in technical careers with sums ranging from $100 up to $2200. The same tribe also offers grants for 136 of their members providing a financial aid of $100 up to $1100 annually.

Backfeet Nation Higher Education Grant grants a $3500 sponsorship per annum to 140 students. The Hopi Tribe is one that looks out for its interests and carefully plans their financial aid scheme in ways that would serve the tribes future best. Members who want to get involved in the fields of engineering, medicine, education, business and law are granted scholarships in hopes that their newly acquired skills will serve the tribe’s interests in the future.

Of course the most common is the Pell Grant, but another good example is the FSEOG that was developed with the purpose of helping students who already received the Pell Grant but need more money.

Other two good examples of federal financial aid are the Academic Competitiveness Grant and the National Smart Grant. These two were designed for students who already received the Pell Grant but has also selected mathematics as his field of expertise and is set on excelling at it. Still, the total sum of money awarded cannot be higher than the cost of attendance.

Applying for Native American Grants

If seeking aid in the form of grants provided by the tribes, the process of applying is usually handled by the tribal offices so that should be the first place where students should look for information. For state and federal grants, undergraduates will have to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid ( FAFSA). The process of applying should be completed hastily at the start of the year, or the students may run the risk of finding out that the tuition funds have been depleted, or just that the deadline has passed.
